Sometimes, I don’t want to watch any series, I can’t be bothered to read anything, but I need someone or something to entertain me. Enter podcasts.
I have to admit, I tend to listen to podcasts when I’m going to bed, which might sound like a strange time, but I find that if I’m having trouble getting to sleep I’d rather listen to someone talk to me about an interesting debate or idea than the deafening silence of insomnia. They’re also great companions for long car journeys, or if you’re just having some downtime by yourself.
It’s so good to switch on to something thought-provoking that requires more attention than listening to music or watching a film, and I always feel I come away from listening to podcasts much more engaged and interested in what’s going on in the world, as opposed to stuck in my ‘next episode’ Netflix bubble.
Though I try to look for new shows now and again, my favourites never fail to keep me entertained and occupied. I thought I’d share them with you to check out the next time you’re bored, can’t sleep or just fancy listening to something else for a change.
My stepdad actually introduced me to this a few years back when I was suffering badly from anxiety/depression. There was an episode related to anxiety sufferers, and it was eye-opening to hear people talk about exactly what I was experiencing. It’s a brilliant podcast featuring interviews from inspirational women (and men) on a varying range of topics from parenting to body issues, politics to technology.
So I know this isn’t exactly an unknown podcast, but it’s one of my favourites nonetheless. If you know anything about TED Talks you’ll know that they cover any topic you could think of. From thought-provoking seminars to inspirational talks, featuring speakers from all around the world, there are so many fascinating episodes to listen to that will make you think, laugh and cry.
If you want to get under the skin of everyday topics and explore the hidden meanings behind just about anything, then you’ll love Freakonomics. Hosted by Stephen J. Dubner, you’ll hear stories and perspectives from people of all walks of life, discussing things you never even thought to question through to issues you’ve always wanted to pry into. It’s a great podcast for anyone who’s obsessed with uncovering the secrets behind everyday life.
Not too dissimilar from Freakonomics, SYSK asks one important question about everything: how does it work? This is a really fun podcast for curious minds that delves into everything from science to sociology and language to love. Pretty much a case of ‘does what it says on the tin’, you’ll learn something new with every episode.
I never would have imagined myself listening to an economics podcast, but here we are. As someone whose understanding of the economy is as developed as a neglected sea monkey aquarium, this podcast is easy to listen to and super informative. Regardless of your fiscal knowledge, these guys bring an easy-going and fun perspective to talking about money.
